भूमिका । —❀— वेद से बढ़कर संसार में कोई प्राचीन और प्रामाणिक ग्रंथ आजतक उपलब्ध नही हुआ है । मनुष्यों के लिये इससे बढ़कर किसी भाषा या धर्म सम्प्रदाय में ग्रंथ आज तक नहीं पाया गया है। इस विषय में एक सुप्रसिद्ध जर्मन देश के विद्वान् भट्ट मैक्षमूलर साहब यों लिखते हैं' कि वैदिक संहिता भाव, भाषा, तात्पर्य, रचना, प्रणाली और व्याकरण घटित विलक्षणता की विवेचना कर देखने से मालूम होता है कि संस्कृत भाषा में संसारकी विभिन्नजाति और देश की किसी भाषा में वैदिक संहिता के समान कोई दूसरी पुस्तक नहीं है। यह अलौकिक संस्कृत साहित्य का प्राचीन तम ग्रंथ “ऋग्वेद संहिता” है। यही मनुष्य जाति के हित के लिये पहिला ग्रंथ है। मानवीय सभ्यता का एक मात्र पहिला निदर्शन मनुष्य जाति का प्राचीनतम इतिहास और धर्म विश्वास का प्रथम मार्ग दर्शक है। इस लिये मनुष्य मात्र को यह वेद आदरणीय है। मनुष्य जाति के जिस समय का इतिहास कहीं नहीं पाया जाता है जिस I—The veda has a two fold interest, it belongs to the History of the world and to the History of India. As long as man continues to take an interest in the history of his race and as long as we collect in literaries and museums the relics of farmer ages the place in that long row of books which contains the records of the Aryan branch of man kind belongs for ever to the regveda the most ancient than the Zindavasta and Homer ( 940-850.
