३ पृथ्वीराजरासो । [ नवां समय ४० Shahab-ud-din, he must have made his escape afterwards and returned to Prithiraj. The elder Husain is undoubtedly the same as Nasir-ud-din Husain, who is repeatedly mentioned in the Tabaqat-i-Nasiri (Major Raverty's translation, pp. 344, 361, 364, 365). He was the older of the two sons of Malik Shihab-ud-din, Muhammad, a younger brother of Sultán Bahá-ud-din Sām, the father of Sultán Shahab-ud-din. The elder Husain, therefore, was as Chand correctly states, a cousin (bandhava) of the latter. In the Tabaqat, it is true, it is said that Nasir-ud-din Hussain usurped the throne of his uncle Ala-ud-din during the latter's temporary captivity at the Court of Sultán Sanjar of Khorasan, and that he was murdered by his uncle's partisans on the latter's return from captivity (p. 364). But firstly, this story is contradicted by all other Muhammadan historians, who pass at once from Ala-ud-din to his son (see Major Raverty's foot-note, p. 364). Secondly, it is more probable that if there was any usurpation at all, it was made by Nasir-ud-din's father Muhammad, the younger brother of Ala-ud-din. The three brothers Saif-ud-din Súri, Baha-ud-din Sām, and Ala-ud-din Husain, succeeded each other on the throne of Ghor; it is natural, therefore, that during Ala-ud-din's captivity, the fourth brother Shiháb- ud-din Muhammad, should have occupied or attempted to occupy the throne. The writer of the Tabaqat must have confused father and son, as he has done also on other occasions (e. g., with regard to Ziya-ud-din Muhammad). Thirdly the description of Nasir-ud-din Husain's character: "he had a great passion for women and virgins, and had taken a number of the handmaids and slave girls of the Sultán's harem" (Tabaqat p. 364), agrees with Chand's story about his intrigue with Chitrarekha and has evidently a confused re- collection of it. There can, therefore, be little doubt, that Chand gives substantially the true account of Husain's fortunes. It may be added, that both the Tabaqat and other Muhammadan histories give a rather confused relation of an ancestor of this Husain (and of the Ghori royal family generally) who also bore the name of Husain or Hasan, having fled to India, and having lived some time at Delhi (see Tabaqat pp. 322, 323, 332). There is perhaps in this a confused recollection of the flight of Husain to Prithiraj, related by Chand."
