[ 24 ] 'Viśālākṣa—the great-eyed one, is one name of Śiva. And Bāhudantin is another name of Indra'.⁶⁸ In the Matsya Purāṇa, Viśālākṣa, Nandin, Indra, Śukra and Bṛhaspati are, all of them, cited as teachers of Śilpa.⁶⁹ Among them Nandikeśvara or Nandiśvara was also an ancient teacher of Kāmaśāstra. Besides, this there is one Nandi- keśvara who was the author of an work on Abhinaya—Abhinaya- darpaṇam, 'the Mirror of Gestures'.⁷⁰ 'Bṛhaspati is at the same time a teacher of the Lokāyata system, and there is close relationship, between Lokāyata and Arthaśāstra. From the Mahābhārata, it is learnt, that the Indian Tradition regarded Bṛhaspati as the Founder of the Arthaśāstra. This old Arthaśāstra of Bṛhaspati, alas, is preserved to us only in a version strongly altered and mixed-up with modern elements.'⁷¹ 'The Śukranīti⁷² i. e., the Textbook on Politics written by Śukra or Uśanas is a work of quite recent times, if we do not call 68.
