We shall elucidate the convention of signs in more detail both from the modern point as well as from the Hindu traditional point. First we shall discuss the modern. We have the formula A = S + B where A = Agrā, S = Sankutala and B, Sanku-bhuja. Let us confine ourselves to north latitudes alone, for, south latitudes did not concern the Hindu astronomers. Then treating north declination as positive and also north Hindu azimuth as positive the above formula holds universally. (Ref. fig. 59) Let the figure represent the meridian plane.
