Again, the plural is used for the singular in हस्त्यश्वरथपदातीनि, there is no dropping of शप् in उच्छ्वसामि, while णिच् is dropped in वीजन्तः and समाश्वासितुम्. The च in ऋज्वायतां च is used only for the sake of completing the line. These may, however, be explained away by Pâninîyas. Thus, in the second example, आ may not be taken as a preposition, in the third, Âtmane- pada need not necessarily be used; in the fourth, the expression may be taken as a Bahuvrîhi compound (हस्त्यश्वरथसहिताः पदातयः येषु तानीति ). In the sixth, गणकार्य is not always operative, in the eleventh वीज् may be taken to belong to the class of पच् to which अ is affixed and क्विप् is added on in the sense of आचार; in the twelfth णिच् is affixed to समाश्वासवत् and is generally dropped; in the thirteenth, च may be used in the sense of तु, and the rest may in some way be explained by resort- ing to कर्मवद्भाव.
