As in bhuvanas that which abides as a common link among them, is known as tattva, similarly that which runs along the class of tattvas as common, is called kalā. The number of kalā is four, viz, nivṛtti, prati- ṣṭhā, Vidyā and śāntā. Four aṇḍas viz, Pārthiva, Prākṛta, Māyīya and Śākta are made of these kalās. Nivṛtti operates in Pṛthvī tattva, pratiṣṭhā from jala to Prakṛti, Vidyā from above Prakṛti to Māyā, from above Māyā śāntā is abiding. Though Śiva is considered to be beyond kalā, for He is niṣkala, yet for the purpose of medi- tation, He is said to be possessed of a kalā named Śāntyatīta. Aṇḍa is a kind of covering ( āvaraṇa ) which exists upto aśkti but though there is the existence of bhuvanas even under Śiva tattva, they are said to be of the form of the void and therfore do not serve as a covering.
