94-100] 'THOU ART THAT' 247 means by which the meaning implied by the word 'I' may be ascertained.¹ नाद्राक्षमहमित्यस्मिन्सुषुप्तेऽन्यन्मनागपि । 97. (Waking up from deep sleep one says) 'I did not see anything at all in that state.' (From this it is clear that) one denies the existence of the mental modifications, (the knower, knowing and the known) in deep sleep but not that of Knowledge Itself. 98. The scriptures themselves discriminate between Knowledge Itself on the one hand, and the mental modifications, (the knower, knowing and the known) on the other and prove that the former is changeless and really existing and that the latter deviate from existence, as they say 'It is self-luminous ²' and 'The Know- ledge ³ of the knower does not (cease to exist).' ¹ But not the absolute oneness of the meanings of the word, 'thou' and 'that'.
