उत्तररामचरितम् (महाकवि भवभूति - संस्कृत मूल एवं हिन्दी व्याख्या)

VI INTRODUCTION. 1 Kshemendra in his voluminous writings quotes Bhava- bhuti by name several times. We have extracted in the notes his remarks on several verses of the Uttararāmacharita from his Auchityavicharacharcha.¹⁷ Kshemendra tells us that he wrote his Kavikanthabharana and Suvrittatilaka in the reign of Anantarāja (1028—1063 A. D.) of Kasmir. So he flourished in the latter half of the 11th century A. D. 2 Rājasekhara in his Balaramayana says that he was Bhavabhuti in his former life¹⁸ and quotes in his काव्यमीमांसा several verses from the Malati madhava. 3 The Vyaktiviveka of Mahimabhatta quotes two verses from the Uttararamacharita.¹⁹ Mr. T. Ganapati Sastri has shown that Mahimabhatta flourished in the early part of the 11th century A. D.²⁰ 4 The Dasarūpaka of Dhanañjaya quotes many verses from the Uttararamacharita.²¹ Dhanañjaya was patronized by king Muñja.²² If Muñja is the uncle of the great Bhoja, as seems to be the case then Dhanañjaya flourished before 1000 A. D., as मुञ्ज reigned from 974 A. D. to 995 A. D. 5 Dhanapala in his Tilakamañjari praises Bhavabhuti (vide note 36 below). Dhanapala tells us that he was called 'Sarasvati' on account of his learning by king Muñja.
