संदर्भ में पढ़ें( 15 ) centuries B. c. the subject of royal policy was a recogniz- ed topic. The schools are the Mânavas, Bârhaspatyas, Aushanasas, Ambhîyas (no doubt, of Taxila ) and Parâ- sharas, and the individuals Bhâradvâja, Vishâlâksha, Pi- shuna, Kaunpadanta, Vâtavyâdhi and Bâhudantî-putra. It is, therefore, of interest to find that in the account of the science occurrig in the Mahâbhârata (cited by Prof. Jacobi, 1911, p.973)* some of these names occur. There we are told that the founder of the science was Brahmâ himself, whose work was abridged by Shiva in a treatise entitled Vaishâlâksha, and then further abridged in succession by Indra, who compiled the Bâhudantaka, Brihaspati the Bârhaspatya, and Kavi ( Ushanas ), the (Aushanasa) treatise-of which the last-mentioned is named along with those of Manu, Indra, Bhâradvāja, and Gaurashiras in another passage of the same book (c. 58, 2-3), also in 1. 98, 36 and elsewhere in the lite- rature(e.g. sâma aushanasa in the Jânakī harana, x.26).
