12 KĀNHAḌADE PRABANDHA When a letter is to be deleted, its head-line is crossed by two small upward strokes,¹ or, occasionally, the head-line of the letter is just omitted. If, however, several letters or words are to be deleted, they are rounded off by a line or sometimes placed between two brackets and rubricated². If a letter or word is omitted, the addition is made in fine hand just above the place of omission³ Sometimes, the copyist has written the meaning of the word in small hand just above the word⁴. Refrains of songs and the recurring caraṇa occurring in several verses are usually abbreviated⁵. There are no marginalia except in IV 293 where in the margin is written : १३६८ वैशाख. The numbering of verses is regular up to I 38 ; after that two verses and sometimes even four verses are numbered as one up to I 147. Here the numbering becomes regular once again till the end of the first Khaṇḍa, though occasionally a verse is left unnumbered. In
