INTRODUCTION 13 The script is Brahmanical Devanāgarī of the Rājasthānī type. The handwriting is firm and bold and is uniform throughout the Kānhadade Prabandha, but comparatively thinner in the Raṇamalla- chanda, and thicker in the Karpaṭīlāvilāsa. The difference was perhaps due to the use of different pens. Some of the interspersed medical formulae appear, from their broad, immature, irregular writing, to have been copied by some one else, perhaps by a young student, who was just learning to write. The paper is thick and the ms is well-preserved. The absence of a detailed colophon, the inclusion of several works, along with information for personal use, in the same ms, may perhaps be taken to indicate that the copyist was also the owner, who wrote out the poem for his personal use. That he was a learned man, perhaps a scholar, is evident from the careful transmission of the text. Ms C comes from the manuscript-collection of the Jñāna Bhaṇḍāra of Anantanāthjī's temple, Bombay. It consists of 34 folios, each measuring 9.5" by 4.25". It has margins on the two sides marked off by two double lines. The right-hand margin is usually 1" wide, while the left-hand side margin is usually .8" wide. The upper and lower margins are, generally, .45" wide. The first 5 folios have 14 lines per page. The rest of the folios have 15 lines per page, except the last (f. 34 recto) which has 11 lines only. The number of letters per line in the complete lines above and below the svastika varies from about 38 to 46, the average being about 42 letters per line. On the verso sides in the margins of the left-hand side is written the title कान्हडदे० (in folios 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 17, 21, 24, 27, 31, 33); or कान्हडे पुप (in folio 20); or कान्हडदे प्र० (folios 14, 15). On the remaining pages the title appears as कान्हडडे पु०. In the right-hand margins at the bottom the number of the folio is written. A small vertical stroke or sometimes two strokes cutting the headline (folio 5 verso, l. 13) indicates that the letter is deleted (folio 4 verso, l. 9). Marginal addenda are very few indeed. At only one place (f. 24 recto, l. 14) one letter (पु) has become illegible; two small dashes one above the other are marked just above it, and in the right-hand margin the letter is written with the same
