Here the word ‘pashu’, ‘beast’,—indicating (in its proper denotation) as it does, cowardliness—conveys a sense that is ‘improper’ (and repugnant to the context). [The meaning is that those who lose their lives in battle attain heaven more quickly than others ; this has been figuratively expressed by means of the words ‘men who are killed in battle as beasts are offered in sacrifice’,—and this implies that the men are possessed of the qualities of the ‘beasts’ ; and these qualities are quite the reverse of bravery and other qualities which are generally associated with the heroes of war.] (7) In the following we have an example of the ‘useless’ (redundant) word.— ‘Utphulla................................................mama hi gauri ................................................................ yuṣmatprasōdena’ ‘O blessed Gauri, whose complexion is bright like the pollen of the full-blown lotus, may my desired object be accomplished by your kindness!’ Here the particle ‘hi’ is entirely superfluous. (8) In the following we have an example of the ‘in- expressive’ word— (a) ‘Abandhyakopasya .................. .............. jantunā .........daraḥ.’
