( १८३ ) flowers in the quadrangular courtyard It is an Adj. of पादयोः and so the sense is that the feet which are accustomed to tread in courtyards or rooms where flowers are scattered in abundance. अलक्तकाङ्कितानि— अलक्तक ( लाक्षारस ) अङ्कः ( चिह्नं ) येषु तानि having marks of red dye See notes on अलक्तक in verse 34. It is well-known that red dye is applied to feet by ladies to decorate them. पदानि—पदचिह्नानि foot-prints. ‘पदं शब्दे च वाक्ये च व्यवसायापदेशयोः । पादतचिह्नयोः’ इति विश्वः । पदं व्यवसितत्राणस्थानलक्ष्माङ्घ्रिवस्तुषु ’ इत्यमर । विकीर्णकेशासु—( वि + √कॄ + क्तः ) विकीर्णाः केशाः यासु ताः विकीर्णकेशाः, तासु spread over with the hair ( of corpses ) परेतभूमिषु । परेतः—( परा,/इ to go + क्त ) परं लोकं इतः ( गत ) परेतः or परा ( दूरं ) इतः इति परेतः a dead person ; lit gone away. प्रेत ( प्र + √इ + क्तः ) has also the same meaning परेतानां भूमिषु परेतभूमिषु in the grounds of the dead, i e, burning-grounds कः अनु- मन्यते—who would consent or approve of it ? Shiva is said to live in the cemetery grounds ( Cf. ‘वासः पितॄणां वने ’ and so if Párvati was wedded to him she too would have to tread there, which would be in great contrast with his walking in the flower-covered, apartments of her palace 68. CHANGE OF VOICE :—परेण अपि केन नाम चतुष्कपुष्प- प्रकरावकीर्णयोः तव पादयो अलक्ताङ्कनि पदानि विकीर्णकेशासु परेतभूमिषु अनुमन्यन्ते ? ॥ ६८ ॥
