१२ differs, he gives convincing arguments in support of his own view, which gives a stamp of his deep study, research and vast teaching experience. Bhaimi Vyakhya in short is a self tutor and is of immense help to teachers and research scholars. For a book of about 650 pages of large size the price of Rs 30/- is extremely low. (2) LAGHU SIDDHANT KAUMUDI—BHAIMI VYAKHYA PART-II Part II of Bhaimi Vyakhya on Laghu Siddhant Kaumudi deals with the तिङन्त section which is known as the backbone of Sanskrit grammar. The work is an original commentary in the traditional style which combines the modern scientific technique of exposition and comparative analysis. The work is unique in the प्रक्रिया portion. The author has given detailed प्रक्रिया of about 1500 verbal forms besides conjugations of more than 300 verbs in all the ten tenses and moods. The use and meaning of different उपसर्गs in combination with verbs has been illustrated in about 1000 quotations taken from the famous Sanskrit works. For the benefit of students, exercises have been given at the end of each sub section. The causal, desiderative, intensive and denominative verbal forms have been ably explained. One hundred illustrations of each of these forms have been given with meaning. The inclusion of well-known con- troversies, with the view point of each side and author's own, is a special feature of the work. In many places, the author has offered new solutions to difficult problems left un-attended even by Varadaraja himself. At the end of the publication have been appended six indexes, of which special mention may be made of no. 5. This voluminous work running into 750 pages has been priced Rs 30/- only which is very low, keeping in view its technical exce- llence and the labour involved in bringing out in such a publication. (3) LAGHU SIDDHANT KAUMUDI—BHAIMI VYAKHYA PART-III-IV The last two parts of the Bhaimi Vyakhya on L.S.K are be- ing readied for the press. Like the first two parts these parts too

१३ deal in great details with कृदन्त, कारक, समास, तद्धित and स्त्रीप्रत्यय and contain excellent material for research scholars. The section on Karakas has been elaborated by inclusion of a sufficient number of new Sutras not found in the original L.S.K. of Varadaraja. The exposition of Samas and Taddhit has also been done at such a great length for the first time. As in the fiirst two parts, exercises have been added at the end of each sub-section. (4) VAIYAKARAN BHUSHAN SARA Vaiyakaran Bhushan Sara of Kaundbhatt is an important trea- tise of Sanskrit grammar and occupies a special position for its ex- position of the principles of philosophy of grammar. This has been prescribed as a text-book for M.A., Acharya, Shastri etc. degrees. The work is quite a difficult one and at places incomprehensible for even the brilliant students. This is evident from the fact that till recently no translation of V.B.S. in English, Hindi or any other language of country (except in Sanskrit) was available. The Bhaimi Bhashya of Shri Bhim Sen Shastri has filled this long felt need. Bhim Sen Shastri is an eminent Sanskrit scholar and grammar is dear to his heart. He has been teaching Sanskrit grammar for more than 3 decades and through his researches has carved out a place for himself in the field. This is borne out by the commentary on the धात्वर्थ-निर्णय of V.B.S. This commentary has won him laurels from whithin and outside the country and has been given recogni- tion by the Government of India too. The explanations of the knotty points in simple and flowing language are remarkable. His style of raising the doubt and putting forth its solution is commend- able. Particularly praiseworthy are elucidations of Karikas 2, 5 and 13. At the end of the book, the author has given indexes which are very useful for teachers, students and reasearch scholars. Dr Satya Vrat Shastri, Professor and Head of Sanskrit Department, Delhi University has contributed a scholarly introduction. The book has been printed very nicely on maplitho paper and is clothbound. This makes it very useful, particularly for libraries. It is priced only Rs. 25/- which is considered on the low side keeping in view the prices of research work of comparative merit.

१४ (5) A STUDY OF NYASA Recently the famous research work of Shastriji under the cap- tion 'Nyasa Paryalochana' (in Hindi) has been published. This is an original contribution towards the study of 'Kasika-Vivarana Pan- jika' also known as 'Nyasa' the earliest known commentary on 'Kasika' and it has been accepted for the award of Ph. D. degree by the University of Delhi. Infact it is the result of Shastriji's many years' continuous study and loving labour. Several current notions have been boldly contradicted. For example, Nyasakara is still believed to be a Buddhist, but in this thesis several evidences have been put forward to show that he was a follower of Vedic religion. The thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter, while giving general introduction to the Nyasa and its author, deals with the latter's time and place, the salient features of Nyasa, its elegant and fluent style and a comparative study of Nyasa and Har- datta's Padamanjari. The second chapter deals with entirely a new research sub- ject 'Later Grammarians' indebtedness to Nyasa'. This discusses not only Paninian grammars but also includes the ten main non- Paninian grammars, viz. Chandra, Jainendra, Katantra, Sakatayana, Saraswatikanthabharana, Hemchandra's Sabdanusasana, Malayagiri- sabdanusasana, Sankshiptasara, Mugdhabodha & Sarasvata. The third chapter entitled 'Refutation of Nyasa by Later Grammarians' discusses another topic not touched upon earlier by anyone. Here the author examines the later grammarians' criticisms of Nyasakara by presenting in elaborated details the reasons for their soundness or otherwise. The forth chapter deals with an important issue 'Correction of Kasika texts in the context of Nyasa'. The author has pointed out at length the grave mistakes committed by the modern eminent scholars in editing Kasika and has offered rectification of several of its incorrect texts with justifications in the context of Nyasa. The fifth chapter gives a detailed account of the misconcep- tions of Nyasakara and an hundred incorrect readings.
