6 Bh., and lowest in the scale stands E., the text of which shows many faults and omissions. As regards the remaining manu- script, in F. occur some different readings and old marginal glosses. The full collection of variæ lectiones, given under the text, which are contained in the five MSS., with the exception of palpable mistakes of the copyists, makes it superfluous to enter on a discussion of the details. Regarding the division of Sūtras, B. has been followed, which division answers exactly to that observed by Prof. Dr. Bühler in his translation of Vasiṣṭa's Dharmaśāstra, publi- shed 1882 in the 14th volume of M. Müller's “ Sacred Books of the East. ” The Appendix gives a collection of quotations from Vasiṣṭha's Dharmaśāstra as found in Vijñāneśvara's Mitākśarā, Aparā- rka's Yājñavalkīyadharmaśāstranibandha, Nandapaṇḍita's Vaijayantī, Devāṇḍabhatta's Smṛitichandrikā, Nīlakaṇṭha's Vyavahāramayūkha, and Mitramiśra's Vīramitrodaya. The Vāsiṣṭhadharmaśāstram has been published twice in Calcutta and once in Banāras. The two Calcutta editions, the second of which is a bad reprint of the first by Jībānanda Vidyāsāgara, in 1876, (Calc. ed.), are perfectly useless, as they are based on a single faulty manuscript, now preserved in the India Office Library at London (J.O.913), which contains only 21 chapters. The Banāras edition is based on better materials, and accompanied by an useful commentary, called Vidvan- modinī, composed and edited by Kṛiṣhṇapaṇḍita Dharmâdhi- kārin, śāke 1781, a learned Paṇḍit of the old school; but un- fortunately the editor has corrected the text ( MS. B. ) very freely, without marking his conjectures as such ( Ban. ed. ). In conclusion I have to express my sincerest thanks to Prof. Dr. Bühler, who has kindly placed at my disposal all the materials collected during his stay in India for preparing a critical and really trustworthy edition of Vasiṣṭha's Dharma- śāstra, of one of the four-most ancient works on Hindu Law.
