CRITICAL INTRODUCTION. The present edition of Vasiṣṭha's Dharmaśāstra is based on the following five fairly correct and complete manuscripts:— (a) MS. B., Dekkhan College, Puṇa, Collection of 1874–75, No. 29, presented to Prof. Dr. Bühler by Prof. Bāla- śāstrī of Banāras, containing 30 chapters, and written on 27 leaves, à 8 lines, à 54–56 aksharas, dated saṁvat 1745. (b) MS. Bh., Dekkhan College, Puṇa, Collection of 1874–75 No. 30, presented to Prof. Bühler by Dāmodara Śāstrī of Bhūj, containing 30 chapters, and written on 36 leaves, à 10 lines, à 34–36 aksharas, dated saṁvat 1599. (c) MS. E, Elphinstone College, Bombay, Collection of 1867–68, No. 23 of Class VI., Containing 30 Chapters, and written on 25 leaves. à 14 lines, à 34–36 akṣaras dated saṁvat 1799. (d) MS. F., an imperfect apograph, prepared under the superintendence of Prof Dr. Bühler, C. I. E., by Vāmanāchārya Zhalkīkar, now teacher of Sanskrit in the Dekkhan College, Puṇa, belonging to Prof. Dr. Bühler, Vienna, containing 30 chapters on 115 pages à 16 lines, à 14–16 aksharas, dated saṁvat 1921. (e) MS. H., belonging to Dr. Bhāu Dāji's Memorial, contain- ing 28 complete chapters, leaving the 29th incomplete and written on 51 leaves, à 12 lines, à 28–30 aksharas. dated saṁvat 1713. MSS. B., Bh., E. and H. belong to one and the same family All four are derived from one codex archetypus, to which B., stands the nearest. B. has been corrected in different passages secunda manu with the help of a manuscript which apparently agreed with none of Bh., E., F. and H. Next in rank comes
