१. The first philosophers to take a serious interest in medicine were the Pythagoreans. Alcmaeon (a young man in the old age of Pythagoras who was more interested in medicine than in philosophy) of Croton, although perhaps not strictly a Pythagorean was closely connected with the sect and appears to have exercised considerable influence upon the Hippocratic school. ३. Pythagoras has been identified with Buddhagoorus as held by Colebrooke:—Buddhagoorus-Sanskrit; Putha-goras-Greek; Pythagoras-English. India in Greece-Pococke P. 364.
४. Cantor, the historian of Mathematics, was so much struck with the resemblance between Greek Geometry and the Śulva Śutras that he, as is natural to the European, concluded that the latter was influenced by the Alexandrian school of Hero (215 B. C.). The Sulva Sutras, however, date about the 8th Cen. B. C., and Dr. Thibaut has shown that the geometrical theorem of the 47th proposition, Bk. 1, which tradition ascribes to Pythagoras, was solved by the Hindoos at least two centuries earlier. Thus confirming the conclusion of V. Schroeder that the Greek philosopher owed his inspiration to India.

७. The great philosopher (Pythagoras) imbibed his mysteries and metaphysics from the Brahmans of India. Mr. Pococke in his ‘India in Greece’ identifies him with Booddhagurus or Buddha and it is but an easy inference to suppose that he carried many recipes and aphorisms of his Master’s Āyurveda with him.

८. Introduction to Susruta Samhita Vol. I P. VIII by K. L. Bhisagratna.
९. The teaching of Pythagoras (B. C. 582), the founder of the Healing Art among the Greeks, is essentially Indian. He is said to have acquired his knowledge from the Egyptians, who, as will be shown further on, had borrowed their art from the Indians. Enfield in his History of Philosophy, says that Pythagoras learnt his doctrine from oriental philosophers, meaning the Hindoos. His Philosophy bears such a resemblance to that of Buddha, that Mr. Pococke, in his India in Greece, identifies him with ‘Buddhagurus’ or Buddha. If he borrowed philosophy from India, he may easily have borrowed the science of medicine from the same source.
