The trees have been described as witnesses of Parvati's penance because they were planted just on her arrival in the forest and because they remained by her side day and night during the practice of penance शशिमौलिसंश्रयः। शशिमौलिः—शशः अस्यास्तीति शशी ( शश + इनिः ) चन्द्रः, शशी मौलौ ( मस्तके ) यस्य or शशी मौलिः ( शेखर ) यस्य स शशिमौलिः ( शिव ) the moon-crested, i e, Shiva The word मौलि means 'head' as well as 'a crest', hence the compound may be expounded in both the ways संश्रयः—( सं + √श्रि +अच् ) संश्रीयते इति संश्रयः ( अवलम्बः ) basis, support. शशिमौलिः संश्रया यस्य स शशिमौलि संश्रय which has as its basis the moon-crested God मनोरथः—अभिलाषः desire, craving of her heart i e the longing to win Shiva प्ररोहाभिमुखः । प्ररोहः—( प्र + √रुह् + घञ् ) प्ररोहतीति प्ररोहः ( अङ्कुरः ) a sprout ' प्ररोहस्त्वङ्कुरः ' इति वैजयन्तीकोशः । प्ररोहस्य अभिमुखः प्ररोहाभिमुखः towards sprouting ; about to sprout न दृश्यते— i e does not seem to be showing signs of sprouting, she has not even a distant hope of the fulfilment of her object. The contrast between the plants and the desire of Parvati is really poetic. 60 Change of Voice :—सख्या स्वयं कृतजन्मसु तपः साक्षिषु एषु द्रुमेषु अपि ( वयं ) फल दृष्टवत्यः, ( परं ) शशिमौलिसंश्रयं अस्याः मनोरथं च प्ररोहाभिमुखं अपि न पश्यामः ॥ ६० ॥
