So death is called पञ्चत्व or पञ्चता । पञ्चताम् is in २या owing to its being the indirect object of the root नी in नीतः। N. B. The King here means to say, 'It is known in the world that numberless passionate persons are pierced by the five arrows of Cupid. But so far as his own poor case is concerned, the thing is quite reversed, as numberless (असंखा) arrows are leading the few passionate persons like his own self to पञ्चता (death). Cf. etc.—Shak. III. 3. The metre is here शार्दूलविक्रीडित । The figure of speech is here विरोधाभास, but विरोध is refuted when पञ्चता means death. There is a possibility of विषमालङ्कार here as well, for there is a discordance in the function of cause and effect. The god of love possessing five arrows and piercing numberless people became otherwise in function in the case of the King, when the arrows became numberless and the passionate persons were led to पञ्चता । The definition of विरोधाभास is— “विरोधश्चाविरोघेऽपि विरुद्धत्वेन यद्वचः'—काः प्रः १०।११० The definition of विषम is— “गुणी क्रिये वा यत् स्यातां विरुद्धे हेतुकार्ययोः । द. १०।
