of the latter's downfall. Wealth is ever haunted by the fear of kings. Silence is associated with the fear of neglect and dishonour. In strength there is the fear of enemies. A handsome appearance is always in fear of being disfigured in old age. Learning and science have the fear of antagonistic discussions. Good qualities suffer from the fear of evil-minded persons, who will do their best to lower the value of a man possessed of them by slander etc. The body is beset with the fear of death. Thus everything in this world pertaining to man is associated with fear. Renunciation alone is free from such associations.

अमीषां प्राणानां तुलितविस्मिनीपत्रपयसां

छते किं नास्माभिर्विगलितविवेकैर्व्यवसितम् ॥

यदाव्यानामघे द्रविणमदनःशंकमनसां

कर्तुं वीतब्रीहेर्निजगुणकथापातकमपि ॥ ३६ ॥

कमल-पत्र पर जलकी बूँदोंके समान चञ्चल प्राणोंके लिए; हमने घुरे और भलेका विचार न करके, क्या-क्या काम नहीं किये ? हमने धन-मदसे मतवाले लोगोंके सामने निर्लज्ज होकर अपने गुणोंके कीर्तन करनेका पाप तक किया ॥ ३६ ॥

अथवा—

कमलके पत्तेपर ठहरी हुई जलकी बूँदके समान क्षणभङ्गुर प्राणोंके लिये ; मूर्खातावश, धनमदसे निःशंक धनी मनुष्योंके सामने, बेहया होकर, अपनी तारीफ़ आप करनेका घोर पाप करनेवाले हमलेगोनें कौनसा पाप नहीं किया ?
