In 1915, a translation of NITISHATAK of Maharaja Bhartri Hari was published by my firm well-known as Haridas & Co. I had an intense desire thenceforward, to publish a translation of VAIRAGYASHATAK also. I wrote to several well-known scholars but up to March last no one favoured me with a promise to take up the work. In the meantime my worthy customers began to send me repeated reminders and demands for the new book. Finally I ventured to translate it myself, as it was better to do something than nothing. I know very well that I am not scholar in any language nor am I well-know Hindi writer, but the public like the style and language of the books written by me with keenness. This was my only consideration to take up this bold undertaking, although it is like that of a dwarf trying to reach the moon. I do not know how far I have been successful. It is quite possible that there are many short-comings and defects, because I had to do this hurriedly—in fact within the short space of about two weeks.
