( ६५ ) who sees a thing with his own eyes महतः तपसः साक्ष्ये इति महातपःसाक्ष्ये doing the work of witnesses of the rigid penance स्थिताः—i. e doing the duty of. क्षपाः— रात्रयः nights ‘ निशा निशीथिनी रात्रिस्त्रियामा क्षणदा क्षपा ’ इत्यमरः । As Parvati used to perform meditation in loneliness, even her friends being absent at the time, it behoves alright that nights have been described as witnesses of her penance. तडिन्मयै.—( तडित् + मयट् ) विद्युद्रूपैः made of lightning ‘ तडित्सौदामिनीविद्युच्चञ्चला चपला अपि ’ इत्यमरः । The suffix मयट् is added in the sense of ‘made of’ or ‘in the form of’ by ‘तत्प्रकृत- वचने मयट् ’ पा० ५ ४ २१ । As nights have no actual eyes, lightning has been quite properly mentioned as their glances उन्मिषितैः—( उत् + √मिष् to open the eyes + क्तः ) अवलोकनैः by means of glances व्यलोकयन्—( वि + √लोक् to see + लङ् ) looked इव is used as a mark of ‘ Imagination.’ The flashes of lightning are imagined as the twinklings of the eyes of the night 25. CHANGE OF VOICE :—निरन्तरासु अन्तरवातवृष्टिषु अनि- केतवासिनी शिलाशया सा महातपःसाक्ष्ये स्थिताभिः क्षपाभिः तडिन्मयैः उन्मिषितैः व्यलोक्यत इव ॥ २५ ॥ HINDI TRANSLATION :—लगातार होने वाली, हवा के झोकों से युक्त वर्षा में खुले में रहने वाली, पत्थर की चट्टान पर सोने वाली उस ( पार्वती ) को, उसकी कठिन तपस्या के साक्षी का कार्य करती हुई रात्रियाँ मानो विद्युत् रूप दृष्टियों से देखती थीं ॥ २५ ॥
