312 रत्नावली P. 267. गृहीतपश्चात्तापा—Being repentant at last. पश्चात् तापः (सप्सुपा) गृहीतः पश्चात्तापः यया (बहु) सा । P. 268. Sl. 16. कण्ठगताः कण्ठं गताः ( २यातत् ) ; trembling at the throat, i.e., about to go out. स्वार्थप्रयत्नः—स्वस्य अर्थः ( ६ष्ठीतत् ) तस्मात् प्रयत्नः ( सुप्सुपा ) । N. B. The King here means to say that the exertion which he takes for saving Ságariká, is simply based on self-interest ; as on her very attempt at committing suicide, his life is almost gone. So, mainly in order to save his own life that he is trying to dissuade her from committing suicide. The figure of speech is here असङ्गति which is defined as :— “भिन्नदेशतयात्यन्तं कार्यकारणभूतयोः । युगपद्धर्मयोर्यत्र ख्यातिः सा स्यादसङ्गतिः ॥” (काः प्रः १०।१२४) Here the cause of death which is पाश, is elsewhere (i. e., in the neck of Ságariká ) but the effect ( i. e., 'death' ) is in the King. Ch. of Voice.—...कण्ठगतैः प्राणैः......स्वार्थप्रयत्नेन अनेन......त्यज साहसम् ॥१६॥ P. 272. Sl. 17. अतिमात्रम्—Adv. अतिगता मात्रा यस्मिन् तद् यथा स्यात् तथा ( बहु ) । “मात्रं लवधृतौ स्वार्थे कार्त्स्न्ये मात्रा परिच्छिदे । अक्षरावयवे द्रव्ये मानैक्ये कर्णभूषणे”—हेमः । P. 273. जीवितेशे—सम्बोधने प्रथमा । जीवितस्य ईशा ( ६ष्ठीतत् ) । ईशा = ईश् + क + स्त्रियां टाप् । The metre is मालिनी । “ननमयययुतेयं मालिनी भोगिलोकैः ।” न न म य य ◡ ◡ ◡ | ◡ ◡ ◡ | — — — | ◡ — — | ◡ — — अ ल म | ल म ति | मा त्रां, सा | ह से ने | दृ शे न The pauses are on the 8th and the 15th syllables.
