PREFACE. For this editio princeps of the Baudhāyana Śrauta Sūtra the following MSS. have been used :
- B. A modern copy in Devanāgarī writing made in 1868 by Vyaṅkājī Nārāyaṇa, containing, in eight parts, an almost complete text of our Sūtra. Copied for the Government of Bombay and registered as Class I. B. 5 (Elphinstone College), cp. the list published by Georg Bühler in the Journal of the German Oriental Society, Vol. XLII, p. 552. The MS. is carefully written on blue paper, 13 lines on a page, and, if I am not mistaken, in some places corrected and completed by the hand of Bühler. The text is on the whole correct, especially in the first nine praśnas. The later praśnas are also very carefully written, but copied from an original that must have been corrupted. The original of the later praśnas is probably a Grantha MS., as is shown by the nature of the clerical errors. The contents of this MS. are not those that have been given by Bühler in the Journal of the German Or. Soc., but : (a) On 76 leaves the darśapūrṇamāsa, ādhāna, the daśādhyāyika, paśubandha, cāturmāsya and pravargya, together 2,500 granthas. (b) On 112 leaves the agniṣṭoma, cayaua, vājapeya, rājasūya and iṣṭikalpa, together 4,000 granthas.¹ (c) On 22 leaves the aupānuvākya, 800 granthas. (d) On 16 leaves the aśvamedha, 500 granthas. (e) The uttarā tatiḥ, on 61 leaves, together 3,000 granthas. (f) On 22 leaves the last two dvaidha praśnas, 675 granthas. (g) The prāyaścittasūtra on 21 leaves, containing 700 gran- thas. (h) On 15 leaves part of a bhāṣya (by Sāyaṇa?) on the paśu- bandha; 500 granthas. From this analysis it will be seen that this MS. is of the greatest value for the construction of the text of our Sūtra, as it enables us, with the aid of the other MSS., to reconstruct nearly the whole Sūtra.
- Be. A collection of texts belonging to the Government Sanskrit College, at Benares, No 115 (cp. Sūcīpattram, page 70). It consists of 18 parts, written by different hands on paper in Devanāgarī. (a) darśapūrṇamāsa, on 26 leaves, Śake 1677. (b) upavyāharaṇādhāne punarādhānādi hautrāntaṁ ca: the second and third praśnas, on 30 leaves; modern, well written.
¹ The part containing the vājapeya, rājasūya and iṣṭikalpa is called in this MS. in margiu : एकपासून•
viii Digitized by Madhuban Trust PREFACE. (c) paśusūtra, on 16 leaves, by the same hand as (a), on the same kind of paper; Śake 1673. (d) cāturmāsya, on 17 leaves, by the same hand as (a) and (c) and on the same kind of paper; Śake 1660. (e) cayanasūtra, 22 leaves; Śake 1803. (f) vājapeya, on 9 leaves, well written, no year, corrected. (g) rājasūya, on 12 leaves, written by the same hand and on the same kind of paper as (f). (h) iṣṭikalpa, on 14 leaves, Śake 1803; same hand and kind of paper as (e). (i) aśvamedha, on 15 leaves, well written, apparently by the same hand as (f) and (g); corrected. (k) dvādaśāha, on 16 leaves, corrected. (l) mahāvrata, etc., called at the end: एकारबौख्यं on 17 leaves; the numbers of the khaṇḍas are corrected so as to continue the numbering of (k); apparently written, together with (k), by the same hand that wrote (f), (g), and (i); partly corrected. (m) kāṭhakasūtra, on 8 leaves; same handwriting and paper as (e) and (h). (n) uttarā tatiḥ, on 41 leaves, well written, but containing a very corrupted tradition, just as B; happily the greater part of this MS. has been carefully corrected. The khaṇḍa-numbers have been partly effaced. (o) dvaidhasūtra, on 63 leaves, śamamtaṃ (sic) 1825. Rather badly written. (p) first karmānta praśna, on 23 leaves, presents several lacunæ. (q) second and third karmānta praśnas, on 38 leaves; the second praśna has been carefully corrected; the third is very corrupted and full of lacunæ. (r) śulbasūtra, on 17 leaves. (s) pravarasūtra, on 7 leaves, written by the same hand as (e). This valuable collection will be seen to contain a nearly com- plete Baudhāyana Sūtra. Missing are the soma-, pravargya-, aupānuvakya-, and prāyaścitta praśnas. On every part the number of the praśna (here called adhyāya) is written; some- times the number found in the original handwriting is corrected. This (secondary) numbering of Benares 115 agrees wholly with the numbering of the praśnas in B. 3. H, belonging to the Court and State Library at Munich, registered as: MS. Sanskrit Cod. 107 (No. 163 of the "Verzeich- niss"). This MS. contains in Devanāgarī writing: darśapūr- ṇamāsa, ādhāna, the daśādhyāyikā, paśubandha, cāturmāsya, agniṣṭoma, pravargya, cayana, vājapeya, the atirātra aptoryāma and ekādaśinī chapters, the kāṭhakasūtra, the sautrāmaṇī, the first two dvaidha praśnas, the karmāntasūtra, prāyaścitta, śulbasūtra, and finally the dharmasūtra. Some parts of this MS. are very badly written. 4 J. A copy of the MS. belonging to the Mahārāja of Jammu
Digitized by Madhuban Trust PREFACE. ix and Kashmir, mentioned by M. A. Stein in his Catalogue of Sanskrit MSS. of His Highness the Mahārāja of Jammu and Kashmir. The original MS. is written in Devanāgarī, has 135 leaves, 11 lines per leaf, the line 37 akṣaras; leaves 57-68 (the paśubandha) are wanting. This MS. contains the darśapūrṇa- māsa, ādhāna, the daśādhyāyika, cāturmāsya, agniṣṭoma, and pravargya. Professor Hillebrandt of Breslau, for whom this copy was made, allowed me with the greatest generosity the use of this MS. At the end of the copy we find the following notice:— संवत् १९५२ श्रीशाके १८१७ ईशासंवत् १८९६ माघशुक्लद्वितीयायां व्यवहारिमासस्य पञ्चविंशे दिने श्रीमन्डौक्तर् औरिएल् ष्टैन साहिबाचार्याज्ञया तदाश्रितकाश्मीरक- पण्डितसहजभट्टेन जम्बूस्थीय रघुनाथमन्दिरस्य पुस्तकालयंतर्वर्तिपुस्तकात्प्रदत्तचिह्नरूपेण ५१२७ संख्यायुक्तादवतारितं बौधायनसूत्रपुस्तकमिदं शोधितं च मूलपुस्तकसाहाय्येन यथामत्येतत् ॥ In the handwriting of Stein follow these lines: “Jammu MS. This MS. contains the Somasūtra, the first praśna divided into 32, the second into 20, the third into 8, the fourth into 14 khaṇḍas; the pravargya (without the avāntaradīkṣā) consists of 17 khaṇḍas and closes with उदङ्ङमन्विष्टुकं वा । To the greatest kindness of Mr. Aug. Barth I owe a collation of some doubtful or otherwise interesting passages. 9. Be 11. No. 11 of the collection of Sanskrit texts belonging to the Government Sanskrit College at Benares (see p. 73 of the Sūcīpattra), containing on 19 leaves the dvādaśāha, rājasūya, and vājapeya; dated Saṃ. 1877, Ś. 1742. 10. Be 4. No 4 of the same collection; 10 leaves; containing the iṣṭikalpa, written by the same scribe who wrote Nos. 9 and 11; on the last leaf the sahasrabhojanavidhi is added in the same writ- ing. 11. Be 7. No 7 of the same collection (see Sūcīpattra, p. 71), gives on 34 leaves the uttarā tatiḥ, viz., the same portion of our Sūtra as given by Be 1 and 11. Well written, but preserving a very corrupted tradition. 12. T. A copy from No 3796 belonging to the collection of Sanskrit MSS. at the Palace of Tanjore, containing the rājasūya only. 13. T. A copy from No. 3798 belonging to the same collection containing the dvādaśāha. 14. T. A copy from No. 359 belonging to the same collection, containing the pravarakhaṇḍa. These three copies have been pro- cured for me by Dr. Hultzsch. 15. Brl. No. xciii. of the Burnell collection preserved at the India Office in London. The pravarakhaṇḍa; cp. p. 35 of the Catalogue of a collection of Sanskrit MSS. by A. C. Burnell. Other materials that have been used for the construction of parts of our text are:— Bh. The vivaraṇa of Bhavasvāmin.
Keś. The prayogasāra of Keśavasvāmin. Sāy. The commentary of Sāyaṇa on the darśapūrṇamāsa. Somapray. The Baudhāyanasomaprayoga by Rudradatta. (I.O. 1262. 3. A). Mādh. The 119 notations from Baudhāyana in Mādhava's com- mentary on the Taittirīya Saṃhitā. Mantramālā. The collection of Mantras used at the agniṣṭoma, I. O No. 3009 (agniṣṭomamantramālā). Śrautapadārtha. The śrautapadārthanirvacana by Nāgeśvara- Shāstrī Somaṇa, printed at Benares Saṃvat 1944. Although the number of complete MSS. used for this edition is rather small, this circumstance is counterbalanced to a certain degree by the fact, that all the MSS., which contain the text of this first volume, are wholly independent of each other. The independence of the various textual traditions contained in them shows itself particularly in the numbering of the khaṇḍas and even partly of the praśnas, which in none of the MSS. is the same throughout. This fact increases not a little the difficulty of giving the right numbering. The division in adhyāyas, on the contrary, may be given with absolute security, at the hand of the Bhavasvā- min Vivaraṇa. The discrepancy of the khaṇḍa numbering might perhaps be explained from the fact that this division is obviously of later times. Bhavasvāmin knows no division in khaṇḍas; at least he does not mention it, just as Rudradatta in his commentary on Āpastamba does not reckon with kaṇḍikās, but only with paṭalas. One of the greatest difficulties, if not the greatest of all, that presents itself to the Editor of the Baudhāyana Kalpasūtra, is the numbering and division of the praśnas. Even at the time of Bhavasvāmin there existed more than one system of counting and dividing the praśnas containing the agniṣṭoma ritual. Bhavasvāmin mentions a threefold numbering. Firstly he divides the agniṣṭoma portion into five praśnas, the first of which contains 10 adhyāyas (comprising the agniṣṭoma up to the prātaranuvāka and closing with the words राजानं गोपायन्ति ); the second praśna comprises the prātaḥsavana (5 adhyāyas); the third comprises the mādhyandina savana (2 adhyāyas); the fourth comprises the tṛtīya savana (also 2 adhy.); the fifth comprises the yajñapuccha (also 2 adhyāyas). This number of five somapraśnas is also found in the Haug MS. Secondly, Bhavasvāmin knows a continuous numbering, according to which the whole agniṣṭoma consists of 21 adhyāyas. This system of numbering is also met with in the Haug MS., which gives no division in adhyāyas, but only in khaṇḍas, the numbers of the khaṇḍas being omitted towards the end. The third system of division known to Bhavasvāmin comprises two parts: (1) the first praśna containing 10 adhyāyas; and (2) a praśna containing 11 adhyāyas.
xii PREFACE. Now, as all the MSS. give different divisions, most of them not giving even any praśna numbers, I had to choose that division which seemed to be most in accordance with the rest of the work. The difficulties mentioned above become still more complicated by the question, where the pravargya is to be put in. Bhavasvāmin treats of it before the agniṣṭoma and the Bombay and Tanjore MSS. place it before; other MSS. (J, F, P, and the Benares MS. No. 63, mentioned Sūcipattra, page 70) give it after the agniṣṭoma. As the analogy of the other Sūtras and the contents of the pravargya section itself seem to point to placing this praśna after the soma praśnas, I have not followed in this respect the Vivaraṇa and the Bombay and Tanjore MSS. Another consideration seems to stand for this arrangement; there is more chance that the tradition of the pravargya section became mutilated, when it was put at the close of the agniṣṭoma as it is actually found in most of our MSS., than when it was handed down at the beginning. As the cayana seems to be the 10th praśna, the vājapeya being the 11th (this number is given to the vājapeya in the Haug MS.), there is room left for only four praśnas between the cāturmāsya and the cayana praśnas Now, if the pravargya section is to be taken as one of these, then the soma proper cannot have contained more than three praśnas. The division adopted by me agrees, as to the 2nd and 3rd soma praśna, with the order given by F and by Keśa- vasvāmin in his prayogasāra, although in his numbering (accord- ing to the MS. of the India Office Library, at least) there are slight inaccuracies. A short note, communicated to me by Mr. A. Venis, found at the end of the agniṣṭoma MS. of the Benares Sanskrit College, gives as numbers of the praśnas (here called adhyāyas) of the agniṣṭoma portion, including the pravargya at the end, the numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, thus agreeing with the arrangement accepted by me. The separate pravargya MS. No. 50 of the same collection bears also the number 9. The collection of various readings in this edition does not aim at being complete. Wherever the comparison of the Vivaraṇa and the evidence of corresponding passages make the reading evident, I omitted to give the varietas lectionum. The anunāsikā I put only before sibilants and before v and h, although the MSS. do not all agree in this respect. In accordance with the common use in the MSS., I omitted the visarga before the combination of sibilant with tenuis, although the MSS. are always consistent in this. The repetition of the words finishing an adhyāya and the anticipation of the words of the following khaṇḍa at the close of a khaṇḍa have not been taken into account, as these repetitions are only met with sporadically. As the text of the Baudhāyana Sūtra has been handed down in sandhi form, without any trace of division into sūtras, I have not divided what the ancient Brāhmans had united, and not followed the example of other editors of ritualistic texts. I only separated
PREFACE. xiii the sentences, by placing a little stroke above the line, without being sure, however, to have given always the right interpunc- tion. The first volume of this edition of Baudhāyana is intended to comprise :—
- The darśapūrṇamāsa.
- The ādhāna.
- The daśādhyāyika praśna.
- The paśubandha.
- The cāturmāsyas.
- The agniṣṭoma, with pravargya and avāntaradīkṣā. The second volume will, if the materials prove sufficient, contain the later praśnas from the cayana on, including the aśvamedha. The materials for the cayana, vājapeya, and rājasūya are sufficient. A third volume would contain the so-called uttarā tatiḥ, per- haps the most interesting part of the whole Sūtra. I hope to be able to obtain enough MSS. to publish this text. A fourth volume would comprehend the dvaidha, karmānta, and prāyaścitta praśnas. In course of time I hope also to be able to publish the gṛhya- sūtra, for which I have collected already sufficient materials. Of the pravara khaṇḍa four copies are in my possession. The very useful and instructing Vivaraṇa of Bhavasvāmin I also hope to edit, at the advice of Professor Hillebrandt of Breslau not, as I at first intended, in extracts, but the whole of it, as far as it is extant or accessible. Whether the promises here given will be fulfilled, depends chiefly on the materials I can have access to. Therefore, if there are European or Indian Scholars and Paṇḍits, who might know of more MSS. containing text and commentary than those used by me, they will lay not only me, but also science under deep obligation by communicating to me what they know of them. Finally, I have to express my thanks to the Trustees of the Libraries of the India Office and at Munich, who lent or caused Manuscripts to be lent to me, to Dr. Hultzsch, Government Epigra- phist at Bangalore, who kindly provided me with copies of some parts of the work, to Mr. Albin Venis, Principal of the Govern- ment Sanskrit College at Benares, who kindly permitted me the use of the most valuable Benares MSS., to Mr. Aug. Barth, who collated the MS. P, and above all to Professor Hillebrandt, who in the most generous way permitted me the use of the copies originally procured for him by Dr. Hultzsch and Dr. Stein. नुजानात्यथ निर्वपति"
In Baudhayana Srautasutra, the chapter begins:
Wait, is it:
निर्वप्स्यन् ?
Wait! निर्वप्स्यन्?
Let's look at the word:
निर्वप्स्यन् -> नि र्व प त्स्य न्?
Wait, does it have an anusvara?
Wait, if it is निर्वप्स्यन् निर्वपेति यजमानो ऽनुजानात्यथ निर्वपति:
Wait! "निर्वप्स्यन् 'निर्वपे'ति यजमानो ऽनुजानाति"!
WAIT!
Does the Adhvaryu say anything, or is it:
"निर्वप्स्यन् 'निर्वपेति' यजमानो ऽनुजानाति"?
No, the Yajamana permits him when he is about to pour out:
"निर्वप्स्यन्तं निर्वपेति यजमानो ऽनुजानाति" (accusative) or
"निर्वप्स्यन् [पृच्छति]..."?
WAIT! Look at the image!
नि र्व प त्स्य न्?
Wait, look at the end of the word:
Does it have a virama under न?
Look closely:
`नि - र्व - प - त्स्य
