१. Of later works, some of the more recent, dating from the time of the Empire, were probably mostly written in Rome and may be as late as 300 A. D. E. B. Vol. XI P. 584. २. Such is the ancient account of Hippocrates, a name without writings as Wilamowitz says. Hippocrates Vol. I P. XLIV. ३. There is no quotation from any treatise in the Corpus before Aristotle and he assigns as the author not as Hippocrates but Polybus. In fact the connexion between the great physician and the collection of writing which bears his name cannot with any confidence be carried further back than Ctesias the Cnidian, Diocles of Carystus and Menon. Ctesias and Diocles belong to the earlier half of the 4th centusy and Menon a disciple of Aristotle. Hippocrates Vol. I, Introduction P. XLIV. ४. (a) But dubious in its origin as was the collection, it had not remained intact even between the time when first put together and the time of Galen. E. B. Vol. XI P. 584. (b) of these (the Hippocratic collection) the very earliest ....... come from the shores of Asia Minor, one or two possibly from Sicily. E. B. Vol. XI P. 584. ५. E. R. E. Vol VI P. 541 E. Thramer.

१. (a) It would thus seem certain that he (Hippocrates) left the island for ever at an early age. The Vita gives three distinct reasons for this: (1) an injunction intimated in a dream (Soranos); (2) his desire to widen the horizon of his medical knowledge; (3) his being accused of burning the Cnidian library. E. R. E, Vol, VI P. 544, E. Thramer.
(b) The ancient biographies of Hippocrates relate a fable that he destroyed the library of the Temple of Health at Cnidos (or, according to another form of the fable, at Cos) in order to enjoy the monopoly of the knowledge it contained.

३. Among his detractors were Anrdeas of Carystus, who practised in Egypt at the end of the 3rd Cen. B. C., and Asclepiades of Bithynia, who practised in Rome in Ist Cen. B. C. The works of neither of them have survived. E. B. Vol. XI P. 584.

६. The striking similarty in many points between the Greek and the Indian medical systems has long been well known. We find in both such things as the doctrine of humours, whose derangement explains disease, the three stages of fever and other disorders which correspond to the Greek triad of aveyia ne yes and kpiois; the division of means of healing into hot and cold, or

cold, or dry and oily; the healing of disease by remedies of opposing character; The insistence in the manner of Hippocrates on prognosis; the oath exacted from doctors and the rules of etiquette and professional conduct declared to be incumbent on healers. There are also many detailed correspondences; both systems emphasize the influence of the seasons on health, and contray to Indian feeling we have in some cases insistence on the use of strong drink as a remedy. Quotidian, tertian, and quartan-fevers are noted, consumption is prominently dealt with, while little account comparatively is taken of affections of the heart. There are also similarities in regard to embryology; the doctrine of the simultaneous development of the members is held, the connexion of the male sex with right side is noted, and a like cause is given for the production of twins-the viability of an eighth month foetus is asserted, that of a seventh-month is denied; there is similarity in regard to the removal of a dead foetus. In surgery there is similarity is the operation for stone, in modes of dealing with haemorrhoids, in blood-letting, in the use of leeches, including according to Suśruta those from Greece, cauteries, many surgical instruments, and the use of the left hand to deal with the right eye in ophthalmology. It must however be confessed that it is very difficult to determine how much is due to Greek influence and how much is merely parallel development. The doctrine of the three humours' which at first sight might be held to be definitely Greek, is in close connexion with the Sāṁkhya system of the three Gunas or constituents, moreover, one of the humours, wind, is already known in the Atharvaveda, and the Kaus i ksutra is alleged by the comment, perhaps with justification, to have recognized the doctrine of three, wind, bile, and phlegm. १. (a) Some five centuries before Christ, Hippocrates in his Materia Medica recommends several Indian plants mentioned in Sanskrit works of much anterior date, as for instance, Sesamum indicum (tila), Nardostachys Jatamansi (Jatamansi), Boswellia thurifera (kunduru), Zingiber officinale (Shringavera), Piper (Nigrum (Marichi), etc. In the first century of the Christian Era, Dioscorides, a Greek physician, thoroughly investigated the medicinal virtues of many Indian plants which were then taken to the market of Europe, and incoporated in his extant book on Materia Medica, which for many ages was received as a standard work.

२. The Prenotions of Cos and the First Prorrhetic (the latter being the earlier, although both are supposed to be earlier than Hippocrates) show that in the medical school of Cos great attention was paid to the natural history of diseases, especially to the probability of a fatal or not fatal issue. १. So Wise remarks as follows:—‘Facts regarding the ancient history of medicine have been sought for only in the classical authors of Greece and Rome and have been arranged to suit a traditional theory which repudiated all systems which did not proceed from a Greecian source’. The Surgical Instruments of the Hindus Vol. I P. 330 by G. N. Mukhopadhyay. २. Our medical system came originally from the Hindus through Arabia. The Hindu medical works contain on names that denote a foreign origin ..... European medicine down to the seventeenth century was practically based upon that of the Hindu ....... Let us take a glance at the similarity of names used in Hindu anatomy with the modern nomenclature of the West.
The division of the brain into—
Shirobrahm and Shirobiloma.
Shirobrahm, cf. Cerebrum.
Shirobiloma. cf. Cerebellum.
Hrid or hrith, cf. heart.
Mahaphala (Maha=magna), cf. magnavelo.
Thus may we see that the Hindu system is neither crude nor quackish, but perhaps the most ancient and the most scientific of all treatments, still containing enough fresh information, as regards Europe, to make the fortune of some enterprising doctor. १. (a) Minoan origin (b) Mesopotamia, (c) Egypt, are the sources of Greek medicine. Persian and Indian sources contributed something to Greek medicine. As to the amount and the character of these contributions, we are not yet in a position to speak with definiteness. E. B. Vol. 15. p. 198. २. Hippocrates Vol. IV P. 452. ३. (a) Dr. Enfield says: ‘We find that in (India) was visited for the purpose of acquiring knowledge by Pythagoras, Anaxarches. Pyrrho and others who afterwards became eminent philosophers in Greece. Hindu Superiority P. 233, 234, 235; by H. B. Sarda. (b) Certain it is , that he (Pythagoras) visited India which I trust I shall make self-evident. India in Greece, Pococke P. 353. (c) The Greek philosopher (Pythagoras) owed his inspiration in India. V. Schroeder-Pythagoras and die Inder Pp. 44-59. (d) Discussing the question as to what constitutes human nature according to the Hindus, the Swedish Count says; ‘Pythagoras and Plato hold the same doctrine, that of Pythagoras, being probably derived from India, whither he travelled to complete his philosophical studies’. Theogony of the Hindoos-P. 77. (e) Schlegl says: ‘The doctrine of the transmigration of souls was indigenous to India and was brought into Greece by Pythagoras’. History of Literature P. 109. (f) Mr. Princep says: ‘The fact, however, that he (Pythagoras) derived his doctrines from an Indian source is very generally admitted. Under the name of Mythraic, the faith of Buddha had also a wide extension’ Indian Wisdom P. 68. (g) Whatever may be the truth in the case just mentioned, the dependence of Pythagoras on Indian philosophy and science certainly seems to have a high degree of probablity. Almost all the doctrines ascribed to him, religious, philosophical, mathematical were known in India in sixth century B. C. The coincidences are so numerous that their cumulative force becomes considerable. The doctrine of metempsychosis in the case of Pythagoras appears without any connection or explanatory background and was regarded by the Greeks as of foreign origin. He could not have derived it from Egypt, as it was not known to the ancient Egyptians. In spite however, of the later tradition, it seems impossible that Pythagoras should have made his way to India at so early a date, but he could quite well have met Indians in Persia, History of Hindu Chemistry Vol. I, P. 22-23 by Dr. P. C. Roy. ४. In Western Greece the Pythagorean brotherhood was founded in the latter part of the 6th century B. C. Hippocrates Vol. IV P. 452.

१. The first philosophers to take a serious interest in medicine were the Pythagoreans. ४. Cantor, the historian of Mathematics, was so much struck with the resemblance between Greek Geometry and the Śulva Śutras that he, as is natural to the European, concluded that the latter was influenced by the Alexandrian school of Hero (215 B. C.). The Sulva Sutras, however, date about the 8th Cen. B. C., and Dr. Thibaut has shown that the geometrical theorem of the 47th proposition, Bk. 1, which tradition ascribes to Pythagoras, was solved by the Hindoos at least two centuries earlier. Thus confirming the conclusion of V. Schroeder that the Greek philosopher owed his inspiration to India.

७. The great philosopher (Pythagoras) imbibed his mysteries and metaphysics from the Brahmans of India. Mr. Pococke in his ‘India in Greece’ identifies him with Booddhagurus or Buddha and it is but an easy inference to suppose that he carried many recipes and aphorisms of his Master’s Āyurveda with him.

९. The teaching of Pythagoras (B. C. 582), the founder of the Healing Art among the Greeks, is essentially Indian. He is said to have acquired his knowledge from the Egyptians, who, as will be shown further on, had borrowed their art from the Indians. Enfield in his History of Philosophy, says that Pythagoras learnt his doctrine from oriental philosophers, meaning the Hindoos. His Philosophy bears such a resemblance to that of Buddha, that Mr. Pococke, in his India in Greece, identifies him with ‘Buddhagurus’ or Buddha. If he borrowed philosophy from India, he may easily have borrowed the science of medicine from the same source.

exact. B. J. Urwick, in a recent work, ‘The Message of Plato’ has pointed out that similar resemblances abound in Plato, especially in the ‘Republic’. The doctrine of the Ideas is Vedanta pure and simple, and the Vision of Er the Pamphylian at the end of Book x, has a typically Indian ring. The three classes in the ‘Republic’, Guardian, Auxiliaries and Producers, are the three Varnas of the Indian law books. This was noticed by Megasthenes, the Greek envoy to the court of Chandragupta Maurya in 302 B. C. ‘In many points’, he says, ‘the teaching of the Brahmans agrees with that of the Greeks, for instance that the world has a beginning and an end in time, and that its shape is spherical; that the Deity who is its Governor and Maker, interprets the whole; that the first principles in the universe are different, but that water is the principle from which the order of the world has come to be; that besides the four elements there is a fifth substance from which the heavens and stars are made; that the earth is established in the centre of the universe. About generation and the soul their teaching shows parallels to the Greek doctrines, and on many other matters. Like Plato, too, they interweave fables about the immortality of the soul and the judgments inflicted in the other world’. These resemblances have been hitherto dismissed as coincidences or instances of parallel but independent development of thought, in view of the fact that Herodotus explicitly states that the Greek doctrine of metempsychosis came from Egypt, and that contemporary proof of any of connection between cultured Greeks and Indians has hitherto been wanting. The ‘argumentum ex silentio’. however, is always a weak one, and I recently came across a remearkable passage in Euseleius, which has apparently been over looked by J. A. M, Crindle the author of chapter XVI of Book I of the Cambridge History of India and other authorities. It runs as follows.
(‘Aristoxenus, the musician, tells the following story about the Indians. One of these men met Socrates at Athens, and asked him what was the scope of his philosophy. ‘An enquiry into the human phenomena’, replied Socrates. At this the Indian burst out laughing. ‘How can a man enquire into human phenomena; he exclaimed,’ when he is ignorant of divine ones’ ?)
The interest of this statement is obvious. Eusebius gives his authority for it—Aristoxenus, the musician, the pupil of Aristotle and a well-known writer on harmonics. His date is 330 B. C. So we have contemporary evidence of the presence in Athens, as early as the fourth century, of an Indian who knew Greek and actually discussed philosophy with Socrates. This must modify our views of the interrelationship of Hellenic and Hindu culture.

२. The science continued to flourish down to the advent of the Greeks in India (327 B. C.). Arrian, the Greek historian, in describing the condition of India at the time of the invasion of Alexander the Great, refers to a curious fact, which reflects no small credit on the Hindu physicians of the day. Alexander had in his train several proficient Greek physicians, but these had to confess their inability to deal with cases of snake-bite, very common in the Punjab. Alexander was therefore obliged to consult Indian Vaidyas, who successfully treated these cases. The Macedonian king was so struck with their skill that, according to Nearchus, he employed some good Vaidyas in his camp, and desired his followers to coasult these Indian physicians in cases of snake-bite and other dangerous ailments. In face of the facts that the European texicologists are still in search of a specific for snake-poison the Indian physicians who liveds ome 2200 years ago might well be proud of their skill. It is very likely that on his homeward march Alexander, or Sikander as he is called in India, took with him a few professors of Hindoo medicine. This supposition receives some support from the early history of Greek medicine. Short History of Aryan Medical Science— Pp. 189-190; by H. H. Bhagvatsinhajee.

१. Buck in his book, 'The Growth of Medicine from the Earliest Time to 1800', seems to belittle the influence of the old Indian Medicine on the old Greek Medicine, the progenitor of the Present Western medicine. But probing the history further he has to modify his opinion and say 'that is is reasonable to suppose, although directly confirmatory evidence has not yet been discovered, that through the chanels of trade between the two countries, some knowledge of the doings of the physicians of India must have reached the ears of their Greek brethren. On the other hand at a later period of history (after the invasion of Alexander the Great) the relations between the two countries became quite close and were kept up without a break for several hundred years. During the earlier part of this period, as appears from the writings of Hippocrates, Dioscorides and Galen, various drugs and methods of treatment employed by the physicians of India were adopted by the practitioners of Greece'.
Fourth Oriental Conference Vol. II Pp. 425-426.
२. Neuberger says:—'The similarity between Indian and Greek medicine of the period is in its outline and in certain details so striking that it is hardly surprising that the originality of the former has frequently been questioned or even denied. The more so is this true since the dates of the more important Indian works are fixed with the greatest difficulty, and before the discovery of the most recent manuscripts they quite indefinite.
In consideration of the outstanding independent achievements of the Indians in most bran hes of science and art, and of their aversion from foreign influences, the trend of opinion to-day, informed by recent discoveries in in favour of the originality of Indian medicine in its most salient features'. १. Neuberger says.—‘The medicine of the indians, if it does not equal the best achievements of their race, at least nearly approaches them, and owing to its wealth of knowledge, depth of speculation and systematic consideration takes an outstanding position in the history of oriental medicine’.

२. Pliny, the Roman contemporary of Dioscorides had also mentioned Indian medicinal plants and drugs. ‘Hindu achievements in exact sciences B. K. Sarkar P. 50-51. See also Intercourse between India and the Western World P. 102 by H. G. Rawlinson.
३. The smoking of dhattura leaves in asthma ..... are modern in Europe, but have come down in India since very old times (Royle) Vide-Hindu Achievements in exact Sciences by B. K. Sarkar P. 49 Antiquity of Hindu Medicine.
४. When we remember also that Pythagoras introduced Brahmanical system ... ‘that there was some Indian influence on the medicine of ancient Greece. The analogy between Hindu and Greek system of medicine is certainly much too close to be the result of accident’. (W. Hamilton, History of medicine Vol. I P. 43)—Hellenism in Ancient.
India P. 196 by G. N. Banerji.
५. ‘Nor do the Hindoos appear to have derived their knowledge of Medicine from any of their neighbours. The Greeks were the only people from whom they would have borrowed it; but besides the immeasurable distance and absence of frequent communication between the two countries in such remote times, the Hindoos were naturally so averse to travelling and so little desirous of intercourse with foreigners, that the hypothesis of their having borrowed the medical literature seems to stand on an exceedingly slender basis’.
Hellenism in Ancient India. P. 191 G. Banerjee
६. In Europe the antiquity of Hindu medicine is not yet generally known and recognised, and the habit of tracing the origin of all Aryan culture to the Greek style impedes an impartial inquiry. As Dr. Wise justly remarks, ‘Facts regarding the ancient history of medicine have been sought for only in the classical authors of Greece and Rome, and have been arranged to suit traditional theory which repudiated all systems which did not proceed from a Grecian source. We are familiar from our youth with classical history, and love to recall events illustrated by the torch of genius and depicted in our memories; and it requires a through examination of a subject, a careful weighing of new evidence, and a degree of ingeniousness
